What is 5 Rhythms®?

5 Rhythms is a movement meditation practice and its funky! It moves through everything and everyone, the rhythms make up how we move and who we are, they are the nectar of life if you like and as we acquaint ourselves with them, through movement and dance, we can learn more about ourselves and others, and how we relate to the environment and the people in our lives. Each rhythm is a different energy field in which you find your own expression and choreography, therefore stretching your imagination as well as your body. Each rhythm is a teacher and you can expect to meet different and sometimes unknown aspects of yourself as your dance unfolds and deepens over time.

The dance can be profound and potentially life changing, sometimes challenging, often exhilarating, at the very least a great workout... and the beauty of it is you can't get it wrong. There's no right way to be either, which helps make it good for all. Here is an opportunity to explore, with the like-minded, just how it is to move the body to great music and learn a little more about yourself whilst doing it. All are welcome in this heart-warming practice whatever limitations or experience you may have. My job is to guide you through this hugely popular body of work gifted to us by Gabrielle Roth from her long term commitment to helping people to realise their full potential.

The 5 Rhythms®

The 'Wave' with Ben Townsend

The Wave with Ben Townsend

Just like light, sound or ocean waves, a dancing body when moving freely passes through 5 distinct rhythmic patterns. These patterns continuously repeat themselves in a wave of motion.

The 5 rhythms is a dance practice for anyone willing and wanting to dance no matter what age or shape this is for everyone. There are no particular steps to learn. This is how a class may unfold. You will arrive into a safe haven lovingly prepared for the dance.

Sessions are often easy and comfortable, but sometimes not. It is helpful to stay open to how we are feeling in the moment whatever that may be and to move with and simply acknowledge how we are at any given time. Change occurs minute to minute week to week. No one session is alike. I will be playing music that will allow you to prepare for the class. Letting the day drop away, giving you the time to take a breath, stretch and begin to warm the body through gentle movement.

We can start to listen to our needs in this time and to take note of the body at hand. It is important that we respect others as we arrive and I ask that we do not chat as it can distract people around from sinking into their practice and you into yours. So we ready ourselves for the session ahead beginning to explore through movement and dance the nature and intricacies of the body. This is our time to be fascinated by how we move and what we feel in any given moment and so to learn about who we are or who we think we are. An opportunity to learn about old patterns and habits through the way in which we move and relate to others on the dance floor.

Or maybe you just wanna dance! The dance then brings fresh perspective and change. I will play through a whole range of great music from around the world, current favourites, delectable beats, grooves and uplifting classics.

Change occurs minute to minute week to week. No one session is alike. Go at your own pace respecting your body’s needs, stay warm, drink plenty of water. Keep the eyes open at all times & aware of others on the dance floor & the space around you. It helps to stay connected to the breath & the ground beneath your feet. Enjoy...Ben
